Contingency Planning for Fish Mortalities

Enscape Consulting and partners were commissioned by the Scottish Government (Marine Scotland) and Zero Waste Scotland to carry out research into fish mortalities, historically and projections up to 2030 - considering disease risks, pathways etc, seasonality factors, and the extent to which waste management infrastructure can manage different levels of mortality events.  The Enscape team used the findings from this research to develop contingency planning approaches for managing these different mortality events.

The objectives of this report and the work done were:

To assess the ability of the industry to deal with significant mortality events at farm, disease management area (DMA) and regional levels
Where issues are identified, suggest alternative and cost effective contingency removal, transport, storage and disposal pathways per region
Consider the industry’s future ABP material disposal requirements and whether current disposal capacity and infrastructure can meet this effectively
The report, entitled "Contingency Planning for Fish Mortalities in Scotland" is available on the Scottish Government's website:

The above report builds on the Zero Waste Report 2016, “Zero Waste Report – Fish Mortalities in Scotland” (also available at the above link) which investigates suitable alternative Animal By Product compliant disposal routes for Scottish finfish farming waste.  The outputs from this work provided the basis for a change to legislation on the practice of burying mortalities.
