Making Reuse Happen from Decommissioned Infrastructure
Zero Waste Scotland appointed Enscape Consulting to carry out research on how to make reuse become more mainstream, for organisations working on the built environment and energy sector (renewables and oil & gas), the main aim being to raise awareness of where certification and accreditation, warranties and insurance provide both opportunities and barriers for reuse of materials and items e.g. steelwork, concrete etc.
This work identified that there are standards and systems in place to allow the specification and procurement reused items such as structural steel, renewable energy components, etc, which maximise the value of the reuse sector, increasing the potential for the development of a highly skilled workforce. These opportunities represent much greater potential for economic growth, skills development and job creation than scrap recovery for recycling.
